How to make a GIF transparent in 3 steps
- 01
Upload the GIF
Drop an animated GIF up to 20 MB. It is decoded locally; nothing is uploaded.
- 02
Pick the background colour
Click the background in the preview, or keep the colour sampled from the top-left corner. Raise the tolerance until the background is gone.
- 03
Download the transparent GIF
The tool rewrites every frame with the same delays and loops, then gives you a transparent GIF to download.
What “transparent GIF” actually means
GIF transparency is one bit: each pixel is either fully visible or fully invisible. There is no soft alpha, so the edge of a cut-out is hard and any anti-aliased fringe either stays or disappears with the background. That is why transparent GIFs look best with flat art, bold shapes and solid backgrounds.
This page removes one colour from every frame and marks those pixels transparent. The frame delays, the number of frames and the loop setting are written back unchanged, so the animation plays exactly as it did before.
Three ways to make a transparent GIF
Colour key: free and instant
For a GIF on white, black or one solid colour. This is the method on this page: click the colour, remove it, download. Nothing is uploaded and nothing is charged.
AI cut-out: for real backgrounds
For GIFs cut from video, with people, pets or rooms behind them. Use the GIF background remover and choose AI cut-out; it processes every frame with a matting model.
By hand in an editor
Photoshop and similar editors can delete the background on each frame layer. It gives the most control, but you repeat the work for every frame.
Keep the transparent GIF small
Removing the background usually makes a GIF larger. A flat background compresses well, while a cut-out edge introduces new colours and dithering on every frame. Four settings do most of the work:
- Fewer colours: 64 or 128 colours are enough for a cut-out logo or sticker and often halve the file.
- Smaller canvas: 320 px wide is usually plenty for chat; 640 px is large for a sticker.
- Fewer frames: dropping every second frame of a 24 fps GIF still looks smooth and cuts the size in half.
- Use WebM when you can: a transparent WebM keeps soft alpha and is usually a fraction of the GIF size.
- Crop first: remove empty space around the subject before uploading; every transparent pixel still costs bytes.
Transparent GIF vs APNG vs WebM
| Format | Transparency | File size | Where it works |
|---|---|---|---|
| GIF | On or off per pixel | Largest | Everywhere: chat, Discord, slides, email, websites |
| APNG | Full alpha, soft edges | Large | Modern browsers; limited chat support |
| WebM (VP9) | Full alpha, soft edges | Smallest | Chrome, Edge, Firefox, OBS; Safari drops transparency |
Where a transparent GIF still wins
- Discord and chat stickers: GIF is accepted everywhere and animates without a tap.
- Slides and documents: Google Slides, PowerPoint and Notion all play GIFs inline.
- Email: a transparent GIF sits on a coloured email background without a white box.
- Websites and README files: GIF needs no video element, no codec support and no autoplay flag.
- Stream overlays: a small looping sticker or alert can be a GIF instead of a video source.
Make a GIF transparent without Photoshop
The manual Photoshop route is File → Open, select the background on every frame layer, delete it, then Save for Web as GIF with Transparency checked. It works, but a 100-frame GIF means 100 selections. This page does the same operation to every frame in one pass, in your browser, for free.

Transparent GIF FAQ
How do I make a GIF transparent?
Upload the GIF, click its background colour and download the result. Every frame is keyed and re-encoded with its original delay.
Is this transparent GIF maker free?
Yes. It is free and unlimited because the work happens in your browser, not on a paid server.
Is my GIF uploaded?
No. The file is decoded, keyed and re-encoded on your device. Nothing is sent to a server.
Does it keep every frame?
Yes. Each frame is written back with the same delay, and the loop setting is preserved.
Why does my transparent GIF have a white or black fringe?
GIF edges are hard, and the pixels between the subject and the background still contain a mix of both colours. Raise the tolerance slightly, or start from art with a cleaner edge.
Can I make a photo background transparent?
Only if the background is one flat colour. For people, pets or rooms, use the AI cut-out on the GIF background remover.
Can I remove a white background from a GIF?
Yes. Click the white area, then raise the tolerance until only the subject remains. Keep the tolerance low if the subject also contains white.
Can I remove a black background?
Yes, the same way. Click the black area and increase the tolerance until the dark-grey edge pixels disappear too.
Why is the transparent GIF bigger than the original?
A cut-out edge adds colours and dithering to every frame. Fewer colours, a smaller canvas, fewer frames or a WebM export bring the size down.
Can I upload an animated WebP or APNG?
Not on this page yet. Convert it to GIF first, or use the video tools for WebM output.
Does a transparent GIF work on Discord?
Yes. Discord plays animated GIFs and respects their transparency. Very large files may be compressed by the app.
How do I make a GIF transparent in Photoshop?
Delete the background on every frame layer, then use Save for Web with Transparency checked. This page automates the same steps for every frame.
What is the difference between this page and the GIF background remover?
This page focuses on making a flat-colour GIF transparent and keeping the file small. The GIF background remover also handles complex backgrounds with AI and creates GIFs from video.
Guides
Transparent Video in Premiere, Final Cut, Resolve and OBS
Use ProRes 4444 MOV in Premiere, After Effects, Final Cut and Resolve, on a track above the background. In OBS, add a VP9 WebM as a Media Source.
Unscreen Alternatives in 2026
Unscreen.com now redirects to Canva's video background remover. Alternatives: pay-per-second online removers, Canva, CapCut, or green screen + chroma key.
Transparent Video Formats: WebM vs ProRes 4444 vs GIF vs MP4
WebM (VP9) and ProRes 4444 carry real alpha; GIF has on/off transparency; H.264 MP4 has none. Use WebM for web and OBS, ProRes for editors.
