Two ways to remove a GIF background
Most GIFs fall into one of two groups, and each needs a different tool:
By colour: free, instant, in your browser
For GIFs on a plain white, black or single-colour background, such as logos, emoji, text and cartoons. Click the background to pick its colour, set the tolerance and every matching pixel turns transparent. Nothing is uploaded and nothing is charged.
AI cut-out: for real backgrounds
For GIFs cut from videos: a person, a pet or a product in front of a room, a street or a gradient. The AI finds the subject in each frame and removes everything else. It uses 1 credit per second of animation.
How the animation stays intact
A GIF is a stack of frames, each with its own delay. Both modes process every frame and write the same frame delays back, so the result has the same number of frames, plays at the same speed and loops the same way. Nothing is dropped and nothing is slowed down.
Transparent GIF vs APNG vs WebM
| Format | Transparency | File size | Where it works |
|---|---|---|---|
| GIF | On or off per pixel, hard edges | Largest | Everywhere: chat apps, slides, email, websites |
| APNG | Smooth (full alpha) | Large | Modern browsers; few chat apps |
| WebM (VP9) | Smooth (full alpha) | Smallest | Chrome, Edge, Firefox, OBS; not Safari transparency |
Why transparent GIFs get bigger, and how to shrink them
A GIF can only mark a pixel as fully transparent or fully visible. Around the edge of a cut-out subject the colours change from frame to frame, so the encoder stores more unique pixels than it did for a flat background, and the file often grows two to three times.
- Cut the frame count: drop every second frame of a 50 fps GIF and it still looks smooth.
- Make it smaller: most stickers look the same at 320 pixels wide as at 640.
- Use fewer colours: 64 or 128 colours are plenty for a cut-out subject.
- Switch to WebM where you can: a transparent WebM is usually a fraction of the GIF size.

GIF background remover FAQ
Can I remove a background from a GIF?
Yes. Upload the GIF, then remove a plain background by colour for free or let the AI cut out the subject. Every frame is processed.
How do I remove an animated background?
Use the AI cut-out. It recognises the subject in each frame, so the background can move, change or have many colours.
How can I remove the background from a GIF online?
Drop the GIF on this page, pick colour or AI mode and download the transparent result. No app to install.
How do I make a GIF have a transparent background?
Remove the background here and download it as GIF. The background pixels are saved as transparent, so the GIF shows whatever is behind it.
Is there a free GIF background remover?
Yes. Colour mode is free and unlimited, because it runs in your browser. AI mode uses credits, from $9.90 for 60 seconds, with no subscription.
Is this GIF background remover AI-powered?
AI mode is. It uses a video matting model to find the subject in every frame. Colour mode is a simple colour key.
Can I use it instead of Canva's GIF background remover?
Yes. You do not need a design subscription: colour mode is free, and AI mode is paid per second.
What happened to Unscreen's GIF tool?
Unscreen.com now redirects to Canva, so its standalone GIF tool is gone. You can upload the same GIFs and videos here.
Will the animation still play after removing the background?
Yes. Frames, timing and looping are kept, so it plays exactly as before.
Does it keep every frame?
Yes. Each frame is processed and written back with its original delay.
Why is my transparent GIF so large?
Edges of a cut-out subject add many unique pixels. Fewer frames, a smaller size, fewer colours or the WebM format bring the size down.
How do I make a GIF background transparent in Photoshop instead?
Open the GIF, delete the background on each frame layer, then export with Save for Web as GIF with Transparency checked. It works, but you have to edit every frame by hand.
Can I remove a black background from a GIF?
Yes. In colour mode, click the black background and press remove. Raise the tolerance if dark-grey pixels are left.
Can I remove a white background from a GIF?
Yes, the same way: pick white and remove it. Keep the tolerance low if the subject has white parts.
Can I upload an animated WebP or APNG?
Not yet. Convert it to GIF or MP4 first, then upload it here.
