How to remove a green screen in 3 steps
- 01
Upload the green-screen clip
Drop an MP4, MOV or WebM up to 60 seconds. The file stays on your device; nothing is sent to a server.
- 02
Pick the screen colour and tune the edge
The tool detects the green automatically. Click the preview to sample another shade, then adjust tolerance, softness and spill removal.
- 03
Download the transparent file
Export a transparent WebM with the audio kept, or a transparent GIF for a short clip. Drop the WebM straight into your editor, OBS or web page.
Green screen, blue screen or any solid colour
A green screen remover does not need to understand the subject. It looks for pixels close to one colour and makes them transparent, which is why it can run on your own computer in a second per frame. This is the same chroma key that editors call Ultra Key, Keylight or Color Key.
Chroma key: free, fast, predictable
Best for footage shot against a green or blue screen. You control tolerance, edge softness and spill suppression, so the result matches the shot instead of an AI guess.
AI cut-out: for footage without a green screen
When the background is a room, street or sky, a colour key has nothing to remove. Use the AI video background remover instead; it finds the subject in every frame.
How to get a clean key from real footage
Most bad keys are a lighting problem, not a slider problem. Check the shot before you blame the tool:
- Light the screen evenly. Two lights, one each side, beat one hard light in the middle.
- Keep the subject at least one metre from the screen so green bounce does not land on hair and shoulders.
- Avoid green clothing, green eyes and shiny green props. The key cannot tell them from the screen.
- Lock exposure and white balance before the take; auto exposure changes the screen colour mid-shot.
- Raise tolerance until the screen disappears, then lower it until the subject stops losing edges.
- Add softness for hair and motion blur, and spill removal until the green fringe on skin turns neutral.

What to do with the transparent video
A keyed WebM with alpha drops into most editors without a plug-in. If you need a different background, you do not have to key it again:
- Put the subject on a colour or an image with the change video background tool.
- Keep the subject sharp and blur the original scene with the blur video background tool.
- Add the transparent clip in OBS as a media source; the alpha channel is respected.
- Use the GIF background remover when the source is already a GIF, or make a GIF transparent from a flat-colour GIF.
Green screen video editor, without the editing suite
You do not need a full non-linear editor to key one clip. This page is the editor for the key itself: sample the screen colour, tune the edge, preview the result and export. If you need to composite the subject onto a new scene, export the transparent WebM and add the background in CapCut, Premiere, Resolve, Final Cut, OBS or a browser compositor.

Green screen remover FAQ
How do I remove a green screen from a video for free?
Upload the clip here, let the tool detect the green, adjust the edge if needed and export a transparent WebM or GIF. The tool is free and unlimited because everything runs in your browser.
Is my video uploaded to a server?
No. The chroma key and the export both run on your device. The clip never leaves your browser.
What is chroma key?
Chroma key is the process of making one colour transparent. A green screen is the most common version; blue screens work the same way.
Can I remove a blue screen instead of a green screen?
Yes. Click the blue screen in the preview to sample it, then raise the tolerance until it disappears.
Does the export keep the audio?
Yes, the transparent WebM keeps the original audio. A GIF has no sound.
What formats can I export?
Transparent WebM with a real alpha channel, or transparent GIF for clips up to 15 seconds. WebM is the better choice for editors, OBS and the web.
Why is there a green edge around the subject?
That is green light bouncing off the screen onto hair and skin. Raise spill removal, then add a little edge softness. Shooting further from the screen also helps next time.
Can I use the result in CapCut, Premiere or DaVinci Resolve?
Yes. Export the transparent WebM and import it. Premiere and Resolve read VP9 alpha in a WebM; if your version does not, use the AI remover to get a ProRes 4444 MOV.
Can I key a green screen live in OBS?
OBS has its own chroma key filter for live video. Use this page when you want to key an existing file and keep the result; add the exported WebM to OBS as a media source.
How long can the clip be?
Up to 60 seconds and 200 MB. Longer clips should be trimmed first; the browser has to hold the decoded frames while it exports.
Which browser should I use?
Chrome, Edge or Firefox can encode transparent WebM. Safari cannot, so use the GIF export there or open the page in Chrome.
Is this a green screen background remover?
Yes. It removes a green or blue screen background from a video and exports the subject with transparency, free and without uploading the clip.
Green screen or AI: which gives a better cut-out?
A well-lit green screen gives the cleanest possible edge because you control the colour. AI is better when there is no screen, the screen is badly lit, or the subject has fine hair against a moving background.
Guides
Transparent Video in Premiere, Final Cut, Resolve and OBS
Use ProRes 4444 MOV in Premiere, After Effects, Final Cut and Resolve, on a track above the background. In OBS, add a VP9 WebM as a Media Source.
Unscreen Alternatives in 2026
Unscreen.com now redirects to Canva's video background remover. Alternatives: pay-per-second online removers, Canva, CapCut, or green screen + chroma key.
Transparent Video Formats: WebM vs ProRes 4444 vs GIF vs MP4
WebM (VP9) and ProRes 4444 carry real alpha; GIF has on/off transparency; H.264 MP4 has none. Use WebM for web and OBS, ProRes for editors.
How to Make a Transparent GIF From a Video
Plain background? Use a free colour key in the browser. Real-world background? Use AI cut-out, then export a GIF. Keep it short and narrow.
