Transparent Video Formats: WebM vs ProRes 4444 vs GIF vs MP4
WebM (VP9) and ProRes 4444 carry real alpha; GIF has on/off transparency; H.264 MP4 has none. Use WebM for web and OBS, ProRes for editors.

The video formats that can store transparency are WebM with VP9 alpha (best for websites and OBS), ProRes 4444 MOV (best for editing software) and GIF (1-bit on/off transparency, no audio). Standard H.264 MP4 cannot carry an alpha channel, so transparent footage in MP4 is delivered on a green screen or with a separate black-and-white matte instead.
What is an alpha channel?
A normal video pixel has three values: red, green and blue. A pixel with an alpha channel has a fourth value that says how opaque it is, from fully transparent to fully solid. Values in between give soft edges, so hair, motion blur and shadows blend smoothly over whatever sits behind the video.
There are two kinds of transparency to keep apart:
- Full alpha (8 bits or more): 256 or more levels of opacity per pixel. Used by WebM VP9 and ProRes 4444.
- 1-bit transparency: each pixel is either fully visible or fully invisible. Used by GIF.
Why can't an MP4 be transparent?
MP4 is a container; the problem is the codec inside it. H.264, the codec in almost every MP4, has no support for an alpha channel in the profiles that players and browsers use. When you export "MP4 with transparency", the transparent areas are filled with a colour, usually black.
That is why two workarounds exist:
- Green screen MP4. The cut-out subject is placed on pure green (#00FF00). The receiving app removes the green with a chroma key.
- Alpha matte. A second video (or a side-by-side half of the same video) carries a black-and-white mask. Some players and compositing tools combine the two.
Other codecs (for example HEVC with alpha on Apple platforms) can carry transparency, but support varies by app and device, so check your target before relying on them.
How does WebM (VP9 alpha) work?
WebM with the VP9 codec can store an alpha channel alongside the colour data. It is the most practical transparent format for the web:
- Chrome, Edge and Firefox play VP9 WebM with transparency.
- Safari can play WebM, but at the time of writing it does not render the VP9 alpha channel, so transparent areas appear opaque. For Safari visitors, provide a fallback (for example HEVC with alpha or a static image) and test on real devices.
- File sizes are small compared with ProRes, often comparable to a normal web video.
- OBS Studio plays VP9 alpha WebM through a Media Source, which makes it a common choice for stream overlays.
- Audio is supported.
What is ProRes 4444 used for?
ProRes 4444 is an Apple intermediate codec, usually in a MOV container, designed for editing rather than delivery.
- Carries a full alpha channel that Premiere Pro, After Effects, Final Cut Pro and DaVinci Resolve read reliably.
- High quality with little visible compression.
- Very large files: many times the size of the same clip in WebM or H.264. A few seconds can run to hundreds of megabytes at high resolution.
- Not meant for websites or social uploads.
When should I use a transparent GIF?
GIF is old, universal and limited:
- 1-bit transparency: a pixel is either shown or hidden, so soft edges look jagged or carry a halo.
- 256 colours per frame, which causes banding in gradients and skin tones.
- No audio.
- Large files for their quality, especially at higher resolutions and frame counts.
Its advantage is compatibility: GIFs play in chat apps, documents, email clients and sticker tools where video files often do not. See how to make a transparent GIF from a video for practical tips.
How do the formats compare?
| Format | Transparency | Audio | Typical file size | Plays in | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| WebM (VP9 alpha) | Full alpha | Yes | Small | Chrome, Edge, Firefox, OBS (Safari: no alpha) | Websites, OBS overlays |
| ProRes 4444 MOV | Full alpha | Yes | Very large | Premiere, After Effects, Final Cut, Resolve | Video editing |
| GIF | 1-bit on/off | No | Medium to large | Almost everywhere | Stickers, chat, docs |
| MP4 (H.264) | None | Yes | Small | Everywhere | Green-screen delivery + chroma key |
Which format should I pick?
- Website or web app: WebM (VP9 alpha), with a Safari fallback.
- Premiere Pro, After Effects, Final Cut Pro, DaVinci Resolve: ProRes 4444 MOV. Place it on a track above your background. Details in using transparent video in Premiere, Final Cut, Resolve and OBS.
- OBS Studio: WebM (VP9 alpha) in a Media Source.
- Stickers, Slack, Discord, slides, email: transparent GIF, kept short and small.
- An app that does not read alpha (some phone editors, social tools): MP4 on green #00FF00, then use that app's chroma key.
The video background remover on this site exports all four: transparent WebM (VP9 alpha), ProRes 4444 MOV, transparent GIF, and MP4 on a solid colour including green screen #00FF00. Audio is kept in every format except GIF. Uploads can be MP4, MOV, WebM or animated GIF, up to 60 seconds and 50 MB; see pricing for credit packs (1 credit = 1 second). If you would rather replace the background than make it transparent, use change video background.
Why does my transparent video show black?
Almost always one of three reasons:
- The file was exported or re-encoded as H.264 MP4, which drops alpha.
- The app does not read the alpha channel of that format (for example Safari with VP9 WebM).
- The wrong codec variant was chosen, such as ProRes 422 instead of ProRes 4444.
Switch to a format the target app supports, or use the green-screen MP4 and key it.
Key takeaways
- Transparency needs an alpha channel; H.264 MP4 does not have one.
- WebM VP9 alpha: small files, web and OBS; Safari ignores the alpha at the time of writing.
- ProRes 4444: full alpha for editors, very large files.
- GIF: universal but only on/off transparency, 256 colours, no audio.
- When in doubt, deliver green-screen MP4 and key it in the target app.
FAQ
Can an MP4 file have a transparent background?
Not with H.264, the codec in nearly all MP4 files. Use WebM VP9 or ProRes 4444 for real transparency, or a green-screen MP4 that you key out.
Does WebM transparency work on iPhone?
At the time of writing, Safari on iPhone and Mac plays WebM but does not show the VP9 alpha channel. Test on your target devices and provide a fallback.
Is ProRes 4444 better quality than WebM?
ProRes 4444 is less compressed and easier for editors to decode, so it is the safer choice for editing. WebM is far smaller and better for delivery on the web.
Why is my transparent GIF jagged around the edges?
GIF supports only on/off transparency, so semi-transparent edge pixels are forced to fully visible or hidden. WebM or ProRes keep soft edges.
Which format should I use in OBS?
WebM with VP9 alpha in a Media Source. If that is not possible, use a green-screen MP4 with OBS's Chroma Key filter.
